Do I need a strainer basket?

You sure do!  If you don’t have one, debris will clog in the pump and stop all moving water.  Always make sure to clean your strainer basket AS WELL AS your skimmer basket to ensure there is always constant water flow, therefore preventing your pump from over working itself.
